When having a conversation, drop some sentences with slang words in them and watch the baby boomer want to explode. Whether you’re sharing a real “flex” or explaining how you “ghosted” someone or how someone may have FOMO, these slang words will really tick them off. So, a quick way to annoy a baby boomer? Tell them they slayed their outfit! They’ll be left in total confusion about whether slaying is good or bad!

2. Text Instead of Calling

“Why don’t you just pick up the phone and call?” I’m sure everyone can hear baby boomers saying this. And, in one message, you text everything you need to say, and you never need to call at all. Baby boomers are annoyed by texting or any other kind of messaging and would rather have a phone call instead. A really quick way to annoy a baby boomer with texting is to add a whole bunch of emojis. They’ll be irritated trying to figure out what the emojis mean!

3. Suggest Stopping to Ask for Directions

Baby boomers are convinced they know the way everywhere and use those oversized paper maps to get anywhere they need to go. If you want to annoy a boomer, simply suggest that they stop and ask for directions. This will infuriate them! To make it even better? Suggest that they get a GPS for their vehicle. They’ll probably look at you in disgust and shake their heads in disbelief.

4. Talk about Going to Therapy

Baby boomers were raised in a time where going to therapy was perceived as a sign of weakness. They are more likely to have the tough-it-out type of attitude. So if you suggest that they go to therapy or invite them to attend your therapy with you, you’ll probably be met with severe hesitation and disapproval.

Want to see a baby boomer get really annoyed very fast? Eat some avocado toast. They believe it to be completely overhyped.

A swift way to tick off a baby boomer is to take your phone out and start scrolling. Baby boomers prefer face-to-face conversation, and we already know they’re not fans of technology as it is. The generation has many privacy concerns, a dislike of influencer culture, and worries about the spread of misinformation. 

7. Share your Dislike of Cursive Writing

Cursive writing dates back to the Roman Empire. It used to be a fast and beautiful way of writing and was easy on quills (which were fragile and less lifting it from the paper was more gentle on it).  Cursive writing was a major part of boomers’ lives, as they would have first begun learning it in grade 3. Most of their academic writings would have been required to be in cursive as well. Boomers believe that cursive writing is more time-efficient, unique, and elegant. So, if you talk about not liking cursive writing (maybe trying to read that birthday card they signed for you), they’ll likely start bawking about how they prefer cursive writing and that it never should have been phased out of school curriculums. 

8. Stream Music

You want to share your favourite song with a boomer? Then you’re likely going to stream it. Once you tap that Spotify or Apple Music (or whatever you use) app, glance up at the boomer and notice their confusion! This is because music has evolved tremendously, and while we can now listen to any song at any time, that wasn’t the way it was for them. They had to buy CDs and cassettes to be able to listen to their favourite songs. And the best part for them? They didn’t have to operate technology in order to listen to music.

9. Show them a Meme

Want to really annoy a baby boomer fast? Show them a meme! While you’re thinking “relatable” to the picture and words, a boomer is confused, wondering why you’re laughing so hard. The pictures and words do not evoke the same feelings in boomers as they do in millennials and Gen Z.

“Scooch closer so we can take a picture together!” This likely won’t get you a happy reply. They’ll become annoyed and irritated really quickly. Besides baby boomers’ severe distaste for technology, which is required for selfies, they just don’t like selfies either. Baby boomers may feel that taking selfies is a form of self-indulgent behaviour that contributes to narcissism.

Talk about a woman who is working full-time as the primary income earner and a man who is a stay-at-home dad, deeply committed to being a present parent, and you’ll be surprised by the look on the baby boomers’ face. Baby boomers do not take well to changing gender roles and prefer a more traditional take on life.

Baby boomers were prone to working one job for a long time. They value job security, stability, and loyalty. It wasn’t uncommon for boomers to work the same job for 50 years and then retire. Talk about how you’re starting another new job, and you’ll likely be met with a lecture about finding a stable job and what it was like back in their day.
